Why homeowners are switching from timber to composite

Timber fencing has a running cost that nobody mentions when it goes in. It wants treating every year or two, it swells and warps through a wet North West winter, and the panels that face the weather usually need replacing long before the rest of the run does.

Composite fencing is a wood plastic composite: recycled wood fibre bound with recycled plastic, usually HDPE, then pigmented and given a woodgrain texture. The wood fibre gives it the look and the weight of timber. The plastic means water has nowhere to get in, so it does not rot, splinter, warp or feed insects.

In practice the only maintenance is a wash down with soapy water when it needs it. No sanding, no annual coat of stain, no replacing the two panels that always go first.

It costs more than timber to put in. Over the life of the fence it usually costs less, because you are not buying treatment every year and you are not replacing panels every decade.

What we supply

Panels, boards, gates and matching screening, all from the same range so it ties together.

Composite fence panels and boards

Boards slot into a post and rail system, so a run is built to the height and length your boundary actually needs. Standard panel width in the UK is 1830mm, with common heights of 900mm, 1200mm, 1500mm and 1800mm. Posts are usually powder coated aluminium, and many systems retrofit onto sound existing concrete posts.

Gates

Composite driveway and side gates

A composite gate is not just composite. The structure is a rigid frame, normally powder coated steel, with composite infill boards forming the face. Aluminium frames are also available if you would prefer them. The frame carries the load, which is what stops a gate dropping on its hinges. Single and double driveway gates, sliding, bi-folding and matching pedestrian gates, made to your opening.

Matching screening

Slatted composite panels also work as standalone screening for a hot tub, a bin store or a seating area, using the same boards so everything matches the boundary.

Colours, finishes and what to expect

Straight answers on the things that vary between ranges.

Colours, finishes and what to expect
Colour familiesGrey, slate and anthracite. Black and ebony. Brown, walnut and teak. Natural oak tones. Ranges typically run four to eight colours.
TextureEmbossed woodgrain. Several ranges are dual sided so both faces look presentable, which matters on a boundary you share with a neighbour.
FadeCapped boards carry a UV stabilised outer shell and hold colour well. A small amount of tonal settling in the first few months is normal, then it stabilises. Uncapped budget board is the type that visibly fades.
Panel sizes1830mm standard width. Common heights 900mm, 1200mm, 1500mm and 1800mm, with bespoke heights available.
PostsPowder coated aluminium as standard. Retrofit systems available for sound existing concrete posts.
MaintenanceNo painting, staining or sealing. A wash with water and mild soap when it needs it.
WarrantyWarranty terms vary by manufacturer and product tier. We confirm the exact range, colour options and warranty term in writing with your quote, before you commit to anything.

Where composite works well

  • Garden boundaries. Privacy fencing between neighbouring properties.
  • New build gardens. Get the boundary done once and leave it alone.
  • Replacing rotten timber. Often onto the existing concrete posts, which keeps the cost down.
  • Driveway and side gates. Matching gates and pedestrian access.
  • Decorative screening. Hot tubs, bin stores and seating areas.
  • Rental and managed property. Less to maintain on a property you do not live in.
  • Exposed and damp sites. Which covers a good deal of the North West.
  • Pool and hot tub surrounds. A tidy weatherproof surround with minimal upkeep.

What drives the price

Fencing is priced by the metre, and the figure moves with the job. Four things decide it:

  • Run length, because everything is priced by the metre
  • Height and specification, which decides the materials and the post sizes
  • Ground conditions, because concreted posts and hard standing are different jobs
  • Site access, and whether we can get plant and deliveries to the fence line

Tell us those and we can give you a real number rather than a guess. Most garden jobs are quoted from your measurements without needing a visit, and a survey is free if the boundary is awkward.

Frequently asked questions

The questions homeowners actually ask us about composite.

A wood plastic composite: recycled wood fibre blended with recycled plastic, normally HDPE, plus additives and colour pigment. The exact ratio varies between manufacturers, which is one of the things worth asking about before you buy.

Good quality composite is commonly quoted at 25 to 30 years or more in normal use. A treated timber fence that is properly maintained typically gives you 10 to 20 years, and only if it actually gets maintained.

Modern capped boards use UV stabilised pigment and hold colour well. Expect a small amount of tonal settling in the first few months, then it stabilises. Uncapped budget composite is the type that fades noticeably.

Up front, yes. Over the life of the fence it usually works out cheaper, because there is no treatment to buy every year or two and no panel replacement partway through.

No. No painting, staining or sealing. A wash with water and mild soap when it looks like it needs it is the whole maintenance routine.

Often, yes. Many composite systems are made to retrofit into existing concrete or timber posts, which is usually the cheaper route on a replacement job. We check the posts are sound and the spacing works before we quote it that way.

The ones built properly are. The strength comes from a rigid frame, normally powder coated steel, with the composite boards forming the face. We can build the frame in aluminium instead if you would prefer it. Ask about the frame, not the boards, when you are comparing gate quotes.

Usually. A steel-framed gate (aluminium is available too) takes standard swing or sliding automation, provided thegate, posts and foundations are specified for the extra weight and load, so tell us at quotestage and we will build it in from the start. Worth knowing: once a gate is motorised it islegally a machine and has to meet BS EN 12453, with force limits, safety edges and a riskassessment. That applies to a driveway gate at a house just as much as a yard gate.

In normal use, no. Composite is highly moisture-resistant, so there is nothing for rot, splintering or wood-boring insects to get into the way they do with timber.

In England, a rear or side garden fence up to 2m generally does not need permission. Next toa highway used by vehicles, or a footpath running alongside one, the limit drops to 1m.Listed buildings and conservation areas are different, and on many new build estatespermitted development rights have been removed by a planning condition, so the usual limitsdo not apply at all. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own rules. This isgeneral guidance rather than advice for your property, so check with your local planningauthority if you are anywhere near the limits.
